What is Naval Station Great Lakes used for? ›

Opened in 1911, Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) is the Navy's largest training installation and the home of the Navy's only Boot Camp.

Near North Chicago, Illinois, Naval Station Great Lakes (NAVSTA Great Lakes) is the Navy's sole boot camp. Every year, it prepares over 40,000 recruits for naval service. It is Illinois' largest military installation and the Navy's main training center.

In the United States, the United States Department of the Navy's General Order No. 135 issued in 1911 as a formal guide to naval terminology described a naval station as "any establishment for building, manufacturing, docking, repair, supply, or training under control of the Navy.

Family Readiness Group's purpose:

Prepare members for deployments and homecoming. Provide family support during deployments. Help families adjust to challenges and to support one another in times of personal, unit or area crises.

When a member of the service member's IMMEDIATE family dies. Immediate family includes: father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, spouse's parents, children or someone who actually reared the Marine or Sailor (in loco parentis).

Naval Station Great Lakes supports over 50 tenant commands and elements as well as over 20,000 Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, and DoD civilians who live and work on the installation.

Navy boot camp lasts 10 weeks.

After Navy boot camp, you attend a naval accession school for technical training. There's no leave until you graduate from "A school" training.

P-Days last for five business days. The number of calendar days may take longer due to weekends, federal holidays, or arriving recruits' schedules. During Navy P-days, recruits will learn the basics of compartment (berthing) cleanliness, watch standing, practice memorization, and organize their issued gear and lives.

A small force of United States Navy, Coast Guard, and Revenue Service ships served in the Great Lakes throughout these operations. Through the decades, they were involved in several incidents with pirates and rebels. Suppress crime on the Great Lakes and protect the maritime border with Canada.

Tours for groups consisting of fewer than 15 persons or greater than 60 persons will not be routinely given unless approved by the Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes. Tours will not be given on weekends unless approved by Commanding Officer, Naval Station Great Lakes.
