I named our first minivan Elizabeth Greene. I’ve christened all my vehicles with the names of women who broke barriers, and though no one at the time knew who Elizabeth (Betty) Green was, I knew. One of my biggest regrets was not knowing that our paths intersected for a few years when I lived in Seattle. By the time she passed away seven years later, I was two cities and three kids down the road. I never got to meet one of the most interesting women of both the skies and the Christian faith.

Although the best-known skier in the Greene family was her younger sister Nancy, Elizabeth Greene was an accomplished skier in her own right, having competed at the Canadian junior national championships since the mid-1950s. In 1958 she was the junior national champion in combined, slalom, and downhill, defending those titles in 1959, albeit sharing the slalom podium with Sandy Osborne. Thus, at the age of 18, Elizabeth was selected to represent Canada at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics, where she was 24th in the slalom, 28th in the giant slalom, and 32nd in the downhill.
